Katherine Throne is one of New Zealand’s leading floral painters. In the 15 years that the flower has been her muse, Katherine has developed a lexicon that has shaped both what goes on her canvasses and her garden designs. As her desire to understand her subject has grown, so too has an unsatiable thirst for horticultural knowledge.
In 2020 a move to Wānaka provided Katherine with ultimate project for artistic inspiration – to design a garden from a bare site in one of the most challenging and inhospitable places in the country. What she achieved at the top of the wind ravaged, drought-stricken hill in a harsh alpine environment astounded Katherine, and it wasn’t long before word spread and she began designing gardens for others. Katherine takes on a small number of garden design projects each year between her art commitments.
Selected projects include The Alpine Patio, Deep Roots, Tall Poppies exhibition, and Perennial Garden. Each project reflects Katherine’s painterly approach to art and garden design, bringing together colour, texture, structure and a deep sensitivity to place.
Katherine’s art and design work has appeared in multiple publications including:
